Yokohama Rubber Company was founded in 1917 in Tokyo, Japan. The company was actually founded as a joint venture between two separate companies; the BF Goodrich Tire Company and Yokohama Cable Manufacturing. One rather distinct characteristic of this company is that it is focused strictly on the business of manufacturing tires. The company was able to build a manufacturing plant within two years of its formation and it was located in Hiranu. Yokohama Company had the locational advantage of being sited in close proximity to Tokyo where it had good access to the Tokyo Bay. Additionally, of great advantage to the company were the industrial activities and facilities already available in YokohamYokohama’s port was one of the first ports to be opened to foreign trade in 1859. Gradually, the city prospered from a small fishing village into one of Japan’s major cities.
